I imagine that in nearly every writing classroom a version of the same poster hangs somewhere. The one that I used to hang in my own room was a long banner where a cheery yellow Ticonderoga pencil lay against a blazing blue background. Down the length of the pencil a step-by-step process of writing was numbered in crisp Times New Roman.

Yesterday alone our class wrote over 52,000 words- and that's only by the handful who have registered online!   I can't even begin to tell you what a relief this is. It's a scary thought to introduce such an enormous project with such a tight deadline to so many people.

I wanted them to think about the purpose of writing, but I also wanted to introduce them to a new way to get at poetry. This year I added a few, all of which have been more successful than most of my old standbys- except for the kale. I'm pretty sure that kale, like cockroaches, and twinkies, could survive a nuclear holocaust.  By far my favorite new vegetable has been the onion.  I don't know why I avoided onions in the past.

The next morning I heard someone saying that the difference in writers and non-writers is that non-writers experience amazing moments, while writers commit those moments to paper.  I thought that idea was as beautiful as the moment itself.

In true teacher fashion I committed to not only writing when I know what I want to say, but also writing when I had nothing to say.  Here's the result of day 2:
